Why? The American Diabetes Association estimates that six million of us do not know we have diabetes!
Alert DaySM is a one day “wake up” call asking Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test to determine if we are at risk for developing the disease.
This past October the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an alarming bombshell that the American population could expect to see as many as 1 in 3 adults diagnosed with diabetes by 2050. One reason for this drastic climb in the disease is that researchers are citing new population-growth estimates for elderly and minority population segments – two fast-growing segments in our country.
The elderly population in Houston is expected to mirror national trends that project continued growth in the senior segment as our Baby Boomer population ages.
You can take action and start changing this trend by participating in Alert Day on Tuesday, March 22. Or, you can visit the website anytime to learn more about diabetes such as these warning signs:
- Frequent urination
- Unusual thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unusual weight loss
- Extreme fatigue and irritability
- Frequent infections
- Blurred vision
- Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
- Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
- Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
** Also, please remember that ADA reminds us that people with type 2 diabetes may have no symptoms. So, log in and learn more about the disease, as well as its prevention! For YOUR health!
